5. Honey Collection in sundarbans

Extraction of honey started from March-April were most of the Sundarbas is full blossom and continues for about two to three months. The honey from ‘Khalsi’ trees are the best quality. Permits are issued by the forest officials for the particulars season.
Under the leadership of a Shaindar or Bahardar, a group of honey collection locally know as ‘Mouley’ usually in odd numbers, fix a day and say into the forests popularly called as ‘Mahal’ the site for honey collection. The Mouleys actually perform the most dangerous profession. The Shaidar leads the team to trace beehives and they move in a definite pattern, usually in rows, to track the course of flying honey bees. In a team, there is a ‘Gunin’ or a spiritual guide to provide divine blessing. But every year a few of these Mouleys are killed by tigers. On an average 40-60 Tons of honey are extracted from Indian Sundarbans by the Forest Dept. every year through the honey collections at fixed tariff and arrange to sale of filtered honey after processing in the departmental unit.
