(17) Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project

 The Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project has, of late, emerged as an important tourist destination of Sundarbans and is also adjacent to the Lothian Island. This is the only crocodile project in West Bengal and is located within the Saptamukhi Estuary (estuary = large river-mouth with tidal effect).

The dense mangrove forest at the confluence of Saptamukhi river system has immense natural beauty to attract tourists round the year. 

The hatchery of estuarine crocodile and Batagur baska (a highly endangered spp. of tortoise) in the project has crocodiles of varying ages. About 240 nos. of estuarine crocodiles have been estimated in a primary census conducted during 16-18 January 2012.

 The place is approachable through Namkhana and also from Sajnekhali by watercraft.
