In Sundarbans, the major tree species are :



Garjan Tree

Sundari, Genwa, Goran, Keora, Passur, 
Dhundul, Kankra, Garjan, Bain, Ora,
Khalsi, Bakul, Garia, Kripa, Bhola, Hental,
Golpata, Keya, Nona Jhau, etc. The major
shrub, herb, creeper and

grass species are :-
Shrub – Harguza, Tora. 
Herb– Gira-sak,  Jadu Palang.
Creeper – Lata Harguza, Dudhilata Gila.
Grass – Dhanigrass, Ulu.
On the basis of salinity level,
3-zones are recognized :  fresh water zone,
moderately saline zone and a highly saline zone.
Salinity increases east to west and north to south.
Sundari – dominant in the fresh water zone
(occupies 21% of the forest cover in Bangladesh); 
Genwa, Bain – in moderately saline zone ;
Goran – in saline zone.


All the animal species restrict their movements during high tide while the fishes find the high tide ideal for their feeding. Larger animals are forced to tread on soggy and muddy terrain and negotiate the piercing roots of various mangrove species.
