(V) History of 24-Parganas
After the defeat of Sirajudullah in the battle of Plassey on 20 December,1757 and as per condition No. 4 of the agreement with Mirjafar and the East India Company, the 24 ‘Jungle Mahals’ or ‘Parganas’(Revenue divisions) extended up to Kulpi at the south, along with Kolkata was gifted to Lord Clive of East India Company.
During British period, the names of these 24 Parganas were as follows :-

It is to be mentioned here that the names of these Parganas are not in use at present. Actually, the areas of such Parganas have been re-named and / or sub-divided in course of time for the purpose of civil administration.
